The COMPASS Jobs Fair returned to Birmingham with a packed exhibition and the Social Work Innovations conference.
It was a hugely successful event with an excellent attendance from visitors, exhibitors and social work experts and professionals. We would like to thank all exhibitors, including this year’s sponsor, Birmingham Children’s Trust, for making the event such a great day.
A prevailing theme from the event was a sense of the importance of social worker self-care and wellbeing, with seminars on this topic including: ‘How to improve stress and working conditions for UK social workers in 2022’ by Social Workers Union and 'Responding to staff wellbeing: The use of clinical supervision in children’s social work' by Walsall Council.
Commenting on the sessions one social worker said: “The seminar sessions explored so many relevant and important themes, particularly focusing on wellbeing for social workers. It was a great opportunity to connect and engage in such important topics”.
Dr Neil Thompson also led special wellbeing sessions focusing on ‘How to Survive in social work’ and ‘Stress and social work: Who has responsibility?’. Both sessions explored the importance of mental wellbeing in the workplace, offering advice and tips on how to thrive and overcome stressful situations.
Visitors were able to discuss jobs, resources and new services with a range of exhibitors including: BASW England, Coventry City Council, Devon County Council, Dudley Children's Services, Gloucestershire County Council, Harrow Council, HCL Workforce Solutions, Herefordshire Council, Jessica Kingsley Publishers, Leicestershire County Council, The Mulberry Bush, Only Social Care, Oxfordshire County Council, Powys County Council, Staffordshire County Council, Sandwell Children's Trust, Social Work Today, The Social Workers Union, Telford and Wrekin Council, University of Kent, Vigoroom UK, Walsall Council, West Midlands Teaching Partnership, Worcestershire Children First, Worcestershire County Council, and City of Wolverhampton Council.
Commenting on the event, a visitor said: “Everybody was really welcoming; it was great to access interviews at the event and learn more about organisations. I even managed to get a job offer!”.
One exhibitor said: “The event was well organised and the COMPASS team were extremely helpful. It was a great opportunity to showcase our organisation and inform people about what we do”.
Event Sponsor, Birmingham Children’s Trust hosted a selection of seminars including the keynote session from Jenny Turnross: ‘Practice priorities: Building a framework for social work practice and practice leadership’. Other practice sessions included ‘An interview with an ASYE’, ‘A Day in the life of a residential Support Worker’, and ‘Responding to Domestic Abuse in Practice’ . Throughout the day they provided social workers and visitors with opportunities to learn more about their latest employment, training and career development opportunities in social work and social care in Birmingham.
Commenting on the success of the day, a Team Manager said: “It was an excellent opportunity to share our brand with social workers and have good quality conversations in person. We also found taking part in the seminar programme really helpful with sharing our current methodologies and approaches.”
