We are Cafcass – the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service – and we represent children in family court cases in England. We independently advise the family courts about what is safe for children and in their best interests. We put their needs, wishes and feelings first, making sure that children’s voices are heard at the heart of the family court setting.
We safeguard and promote the welfare of children going through the family justice system. We are the largest employer of Children’s Social Workers in England, and we support over 140,000 children every year by understanding their experiences and speaking up for them when the family court makes critical decisions about their futures.
Our Social Workers, which we call Family Court Advisers, although you may also know them as Children’s Guardians, may be asked by the court to work with families and then advise the court on what we consider to be the best interests of the children involved in three main areas:
- divorce and separation, sometimes called ‘private law’, where parents or carers cannot agree on arrangements for their children.
- care proceedings, sometimes called ‘public law’, where social services have serious concerns about the safety or welfare of a child; and
- adoption, which can be either public or private law.
If our purpose resonates with you, then consider a career with an employer where you will be trusted to do the right thing and have independence over your work. You will also enjoy a healthy work/life balance while doing it. We are modern, flexible and inclusive in all we do, and offer dedicated support and opportunities for development, whatever stage you are at in your career.
If you join us, you will have a personalised, effective induction that will help you to settle into your new role and provide the conditions for you to develop your skills and confidence. You will benefit from at least 28 days annual leave, plus Bank Holidays, and with 5 years’ continuous service – which could include your current employment – this rises to 33 days, with opportunities to buy / sell leave also.
Our commitment to supporting staff wellbeing is further demonstrated by the 4 wellbeing days per year everyone can take, and supplemented by a 24/7/365 employee assistance programme, enrolment to a health cash plan – with premium paid by Cafcass – that enables you to claim a range of costs including dental, optical, physiotherapy, prescription costs, etc. and this can be enhanced to include family members.
